Pituitary infections include:

  • perisellar arachnoiditis;

  • pituitary tuberculoma;

Infection occurs as a result of hematogenous or local spread of the pathogen.

A weakened immune system, immunodeficiency may lead to a pituitary gland cytomegalovirus infection, toxoplasmosis, coccidioidosis, histoplasmosis, aspergillosis, rarely – common viral infections (influenza, measles, mumps, herpes), sometimes – a syphilitic lesion of the pituitary gland.

Also, infections of the sellar region can occur as a possible complication of surgical treatment.
