PITUITARY APOPLEXY

Pituitary apoplexy is a sharp worsening of neurological status of the patient, resulting from a rather sharp increase in the size of the tumor as a result of hemorrhage, heart attack or tumor necrosis, which can manifest itself in the following symptoms:

  • headache;
  • ophthalmic disorders – ophthalmoplegia, exophthalmos, impaired visual function;
  • mental disorders;
  • impaired level of consciousness;

Treatment of pituitary apoplexy

The therapeutic management for pituitary apoplexy is aimed at surgical decompression of parasellar structures (visual pathways, pituitary, third ventricle, cavernous sinus), usually by transsphenoidal approach
